About Flying-Irish

I found this painting on the internet attributed to Miyamoto Musashi. Musashi was a Japanese swordsman who practiced a unique double-bladed style. He was undefeated in 61 duels. I read on Wikipedia that the closet anyone else in Japan came to that record of victories was around 30. He used unconventional means to win such as being extremely late and not bathing before a duel. These unconventional approaches unnerved his opponents and contributed to his victories.

Later in life he wrote the Book of Five Rings (Go Rin No Sho). For martial artists and strategists this is a must read book. There are a lot of translations. I suggest reading more than one version.

I find the painting on this page a great example of the balance and simplicity that is at the core of all martial arts. Contrast this with the brutality of 61 duals and you start to see some of the mystery that is martial arts.
